You ’ve probably taken a photo before where the sundown expect beautiful , but the landscape painting was too drear . Byplacing a smutty cardover part of your lens , and taking a slow photograph shot , you may take photos like these :

Winner – LA
I shoot down it on a Canon 7D with a Sigma 30 millimetre at 16 f - occlusive and 100 ISO at a 10 sec shutter , covered the top of the effigy with my billfold for for about 7 - 8 seconds . [ Ed note : not exactly a black circuit board , but close enough ! ] This exposure is unedited . This is taken in the hills of Whittier ( a suburban area of Los Angeles ) When I was packing up to will I remembered this competition and assay out a couple shot , this was the best see one . I look forward to trying again in the future and giving myself more metre .

Boats on the Water
Ghostly boats waiting for the fishermen who have dissappeared into the lights . take aim in West Coast Park , Singapore at 11:20 PM . The picture was made using Canon 550D ( T2i ) with a 17 - 55/2.8 lens on a tripod . I did not have a black card , so ended up using a creditcard ! No post processing done , besides changeover from RAW . It was a 25 second shot for the empty boat , and the refinery in the scope got about 5 seconds . I took a number of shots , this one was the tart acceptable one . Aperture was stopped at 7.1 , with an ISO of 200 , and focal length of 31 mm .

Power Line Sunset
determine this “ dim carte du jour ” technique very interesting and took me a brace of tries to get this shot … Been watch to get the clouds with the sunset but not much clouds out when I shot this . However this black identity card technique give a really physical composition of the sunset , looks fantastic . The foreground expect like it was illuminate with moon light but it was n’t , just the proficiency .

Even-Lit Liquors
This proficiency is really utilitarian if you find yourself with imbalanced light conditions . I tried using it in a bunch of locations and this one add up out the best . Which was in Allston , MA . With my Canon Rebel XSi I set it to 30″ 2d photo at f/22.0 , manual focus . I blocked out the street lights and ‘ Liquors ’ sign with a black identity card for 20 second base then the ‘ hard drink ’ polarity for an extra 5″.

The Thickets
I took this shot on Sunday eve in Princeton , NJ . I trekked a picayune manner through some woods to get to the spot just off the route . I did n’t actually have a little man of black paper , so I take a fictile compact disk case and used that ! I tried not to mess with it in PS too much , but I did neuter the direct contrast and brightness just so you could see some more of the tree because they were moderately much pitch-black to begin with . Thus , I sacrificed some of the color , but I mean it was better . This was my first endeavor at this character of shot , but I ’ll definitely pull this out of my bag of tricks again ! Thanks for making me learn it ! Tripod - mounted Canon Rebel XSi , 30 sec , F22 , ISO 100

Skyline
My original destination was to was shoot my NCC-1701 ( Pre - Refit ) model in a light box . When it was n’t looking positive , I happened to count out my windowpane and image the sun setting over the Gatineau Hills with the Saint Brigid ’s Centre For The Arts ( Ottawa , Canada ) in the foreground . I shot this with my Cannon Rebel XT , 75 - 300 mm lens . I had the camera set with a 25 second photo with with the black card covering the sunset for about 15 second . I made some minor change in RAW and I only used Photoshop for image resizing , even though I really wanted to get rid of those tycoon lines !

Sensor Dodge & Burn
This was my final stroke in a 9 - mile street photography trek that spanned three boroughs . The good part of today had been grey , but the sun peeked out from behind the clouds for about an 60 minutes before sundown . I live in Astoria , Queens and as I was returning home , I took a detour by Astoria Park to take the air by the water . As the sun dip below the upper east side skyline the semblance began to become all the scrumptious shades of gold and red . I think reading about the Gizmodo shooting challenge earlier in the week and make up one’s mind it would be a dainty attack at what I wish to call “ Sensor Dodge & Burn ” . Nikon D700 with AF - S Nikkor 50 millimetre f/1.4 G lens climb on on a tripod . , f16 , ISO 100 , 1.6 Seconds Exposure .
I used the smallest aperture and the lowest ISO in parliamentary law to stretch the photo enough for the “ dodge ” . I did n’t have a black card with me so I just used my deal . I set the self timer at 2 seconds so that I would n’t get camera handshake . Because the urine was just about as bright as the sky , I shielded everything above the concrete curb for or so 1.4 seconds , while using a slight jitter motion to foreclose a fine line . Only the last fifth part of a second was used to bring out the sky and water . I made the same attempt about 8 meter until I was satisfied with the timing and positioning of the dodging and burn .

Self-Illuminating Flowers
adjudicate for this week ’s challenge to frivol away the LA sunset from Mulholland Drive . find this overlook with the flower flowers to make the foreground a bit more interesting . I tried to incorporate two changes in the black card and this was the closest I was ever able-bodied to get before I lost the perfect brightness level . First degree was more or less angled and covered everything other than the efflorescence . The second leg I seek to get the eternal sleep of the mountains exposed but did n’t quite get it where I want it to be . last , I scantily rent the sky above the horizon get any exposure at all before the shutter closed . Only situation processing done in Aperture was a slight increase in people of colour saturation . Other than that this is just how it turn out on its own . tear on a Canon T2i with Sigma 17 - 50 2.8 . 17 mm , ISO 100 , f22 , exp 0.8sec .

Garden of Good and Evil
I saw this Metallic globe in a garden with the synodic month struggle in it , but it just did n’t have enough light to amply utilize the disastrous card , so I used a single taper .
I originally had the candle placed off to one side and had the black card block the leftover side of the frame , but I wanted to try something new and dissimilar , so I localize the cd in the center and used the smuggled wag vertically in the eye of the frame to cover the flaming . It was extremely difficult to get it just good .
There is still some of the opprobrious notice in the shooting , but I like to think of it as the darkness separating just ( cherub ) and evil ( diabolic orb of malevolence ) . Nikon D90 , 50 mm , f4.5 , Shutter- 5.5sec ( Black card expose for approx 4.5sec )

Stream
This was my 2d picnic to this parking area in an endeavour to get some photos for this challenge . The first nighttime was too frigid so I look sharp and stayed near the car . The second dark was nice enough that I wandered around looking for the perfect spot to limit up my tripod . I was a bit hesitating because this was at a ledge right over the water and getting to it was a bit precarious but once I got the shot with the correct black card exposure , it was deserving it . scud with Canon 5d Mark II , 24 - 105 mm lens at 28 mm , f/18 , 1.3sec , ISO100 with Cokin ND8 and GND8 filter .
