When The Empire Strikes Back was released in 1980 , no one had ever seen a Force Ghost . No one had ever seen the Force used to lift a ship . It was all new and it was ok . But , when director Rian Johnson bring in a apparently new Force power in The Last Jedi , people went half-baked .
Turns out , though , what Johnson had Luke Skywalker do was n’t exactly novel .
Johnson took to Twitter today with a uproarious serial publication of image that , well , it ’s merriment to experience them on your own .

So there it is . In The Jedi Path : A manual of arms for Students of the Force , a 2010 book by Daniel Wallace , the “ doppelganger ” proficiency used by Luke Skywalker at the last of The Last Jedi to fob Kylo Ren is base . It was part of Star Wars long before Rian Johnson get his hands on the franchise .
However , there are a few caveat here . By the loose rule of the new Star Wars canon , that book , which is write to kind of be one of the “ consecrated Jedi textbook , ” is now “ Legends . ” It ’s not part of what ’s see “ literal . ” However , plenty of things from Legends have made their path into the canyon , such as Grand Admiral Thrawn . It ’s a very good position for Star Wars filmmaker to assay inspiration and , it seems , that may have been what Johnson did .

For more data on the book , its Wookieepedia entryis pretty solid .
Also , Johnson had already talk about some of this in interviews since the release of the film but never mentioned this Quran . It ’s rummy , but still unbelievably interesting . you may read many of those quotes in the stories below .
The public debate rages on .
