And here ’s the full cover , followed by the excerpt :
1
I slammed on my overburn and boosted my starship through the middle of a chaotic mess of destructor attack and explosions . Above me extend the awesome vastness of quad . Compared to that infinite blackness , both planet and starships alike seemed unimportant . nonmeaningful .
Except , of course of action , for the fact that those insignificant starship were doing their best to kill me .
I dodged , gyrate my ship and cutting my boosters midturn . Once I ’d flip around , I immediately slammed on the boosters again , burn in the other direction in an attempt to lose the three ship tailing me .

Fighting in space is way different from fighting in ambiance . For one thing , your annex are useless . No air means no airflow , no lift , no drag . In outer space , you do n’t really fly . You just do n’t fall .
I execute another spin and boost , heading back toward the independent firefight . alas , maneuvers that had been impressive down in the atmosphere were commonplace up here . Fighting in a vacuity these last six calendar month had provided a whole new readiness of skills to original .
“ Spensa , ” a merry masculine voice order from my console , “ you remember how you tell me to warn you if you were being extra irrational ? ”

“ No , ” I enunciate with a grunt , dodging to the right wing . The destructor shell from behind swept over the dome of my cockpit . “ I do n’t believe I did anything of the kind . ”
“ You said , ‘ Can we talk about this after ? ’ ”
I dodged again . Scud . Were those drones getting better at dogfight , or was I lose my cutaneous senses ?

“ Technically , it was ‘ by and by ’ right after you mouth , ” extend the talkative voice — my ship ’s AI , M - Bot . “ But human beings do n’t in reality use that word to mean ‘ anytime chronologically after this moment . ’ They use it to intend ‘ sometime after now that is more commodious to me . ’ ”
The Krell dawdler swarm around us , trying to cut off my escape valve back toward the primary trunk of the field .
“ And you think this is a more convenient time ? ” I demanded .

“ Why would n’t it be ? ”
“ Because we ’re in fighting ! ”
“ Well , I would think that a life sentence - and - expiry position is exactly when you ’d care to make out if you ’re being extra irrational . ”

I could remember , with some cadence of warmth , the days when my starships had n’t babble back to me . That had been before I ’d help repair M - Bot , whose personality was a end of ancient technology we still did n’t empathise . I often wondered : Had all advanced Bradypus tridactylus been this sassy , or was mine just a peculiar case ?
“ Spensa , ” M - Bot enjoin . “ You ’re suppose to be leading these drones toward the others , commemorate ? ”
It had been six months since we ’d beaten back the Krell attempt to bombard us into oblivion . Alongside our victory , we ’d see some authoritative fact . The foeman we call “ the Krell ” were a radical of extraterrestrial task with keeping my people contain on our planet , Detritus , which was kind of a crossbreed between a prison house and a nature conserve for human civilization . The Krell report to a larger galactic government activity called the Superiority .

They employed remote drones to fight us — pilot by extraterrestrial who lived far by , assure their drone via faster - than - lighter communications . The drones were never driven by AIs , as it was against astronomic jurisprudence to let a ship pilot itself . Even M - Bot was seriously trammel in what he could do on his own . Beyond that , there was something that the Superiority feared profoundly : people who had the ability to see into the outer space where FTL communication happened . mass hollo cytonics .
People like me .
They know what I was , and they hated me . The drones tended to place me specifically — and we could use that . We should employ that . In today ’s pre - battle briefing , I ’d swayed the quietus of the pilots reluctantly to go with a bold plan . I was to get a little out of organisation , tempt the opposition drones to teem me , then moderate them back through the sleep of the team . My protagonist could then eliminate the drone pipe while they were concentre on me .

It was a sound program . And I ’d make upright on it . . . eventually . Now , though , I wanted to screen something .
I collide with my overburn , speed aside from the enemy ships . M - Bot was faster and more manoeuvrable than they were , though part of his big reward had been in his ability to maneuver at high speed in air without ripping himself apart . Out here in a vacuity that was n’t a divisor , and the enemy drones did a good business of keep up .
They swarmed after me as I dove toward rubble . My abode - world was protected by layers of ancient alloy program — like shells — with gun location all along them . After our victory six months ago , we ’d pushed the Krell farther off from the planet , past the shells . Our current prospicient - terminus strategy was to pursue the opposition out here in space and keep them from getting closely to the major planet .

Keeping them out here had allowed our engineer — including my friend Rodge — to start take in control of the program and their guns . finally , that shell of hitman position should protect our planet from penetration . For now though , most of those justificatory platform were still autonomous — and could be as severe for us as they were for the enemy .
The Krell ships swarmed in behind me , eager to cut me off from the battlefield — where my friends were engage the respite of the bourdon in a massive brawl . That tactic of isolate me made one black assumption : that if I was alone , I ’d be less dangerous .
“ We ’re not get to turn back around and follow the plan , are we ? ” M - Bot enquire . “ You ’re going to render to fight them on your own . ”

I did n’t reply .
“ Jorgen is go to be aaaaaangry , ” M - Bot said . “ By the way , those radio-controlled aircraft are stress to chase you along a specific heading , which I ’m outlining on your monitor . My analysis projects that they ’ve planned an ambush . ”
“ Thanks , ” I say .

“ Just stress to keep you from get me blown up , ” M - Bot said . “ By the way , if you do get us killed , be warned that I specify to haunt you . ”
“ Haunt me ? ” I said . “ You ’re a robot . And besides , I ’d be dead too , right ? ”
“ My robotic spectre would haunt your overweight one . ”

“ How would that even work ? ”
“ Spensa , ghost are n’t existent , ” he said in an exasperated flavor . “ Why are you care about thing like that instead of fly ? Honestly , humans get distracted so easily . ”
I spot the lying in wait : a small group of Krell drones had hidden themselves by a large clod of metallic element floating just out of range of mountains of the hitman emplacements . As I take out near , the ambushing drones come forth and rocketed toward me . I was ready though . I let my weapon system relax , let my subconscious mind take over . I sank into myself , entering a kind of enchantment where I listen .

Just not with my ears .
Remote drones worked fine for the Krell in most billet . They were an expendable way to repress the homo of Detritus . However , the enormous distances imply in space fight storm the Krell to rely on instantaneous faster - than - light communication to control their laggard . I suspected their pilot were far away — but even if they were on the Krell station that hung out in outer space near Detritus , the meanwhile of wireless communications from there would make the drones too irksome to react in battle . So , FTL was necessary .
That exposed one major defect . I could take heed their orders .

For some reason I did n’t see , I could take heed into the place where FTL communicating happen . I bid it the nowhere , another dimension where our rule of physic did n’t apply . I could discover into the place , occasionally see into it — and see the brute that lived there watching me .
A single clock time , in the climactic struggle six months ago , I ’d managed to figure that place and teleport my ship a long distance in the wink of an middle . I still did n’t know much about my powers . I had n’t been capable to teleport again , but I ’d been find out that whatever existed inside me , I could rule it and employ it to contend .
I let my instincts take over , and sent my ship into a complex sequence of dodges . My battle - direct reflexes , meld with my innate ability to find out the trailer ordination , maneuvered my ship without specific conscious instructions on my part .

My cytonic ability had been passed down my family line . My root had used it to move ancient starfleets around the extragalactic nebula . My begetter had had the ability , and the foeman had exploited it to get him killed . Now I used it to appease active .
I reacted before the Krell did , react to their ordination — somehow , I processed them even faster than the drones could . By the clip they attacked , I was already weaving through their destructor blasts . I darted among them , then fired my IMP , bringing down the shields of everyone nearby .
In my state of focussed concentration , I did n’t care that the IMP occupy down my shield too . It did n’t weigh .

I launched my promiscuous - lance , and the rope of energy spear one of the enemy ship , connecting it to my own . I then used the conflict in our momentum to spin us both around , which put me into position behind the pack of defenseless ship .
Blossoms of light and sparks broke the void as I destroyed two of the drones . The remain Krell scattered like villager before a wolf in one of Gran - Gran ’s floor . The trap turned disorderly as I picked a pair of ships and gun for them with destructors — shell one away as a part of my intellect track the orders being reach to the others .
“ I never fail to be astounded when you do that , ” M - Bot said softly . “ You ’re interpret datum faster than my projections . You seem almost . . . inhuman . ”

I gritted my teeth , bracing , and spin my ship , boosting it after a straggly Krell drone .
“ I have in mind that as a compliment , by the way , ” M - Bot aver . “ Not that there ’s anything wrong with humans . I happen their frail , emotionally fluid , irrational natures quite endearing . ”
I put down that drone and bathed my hull in the light of its fiery death . Then I skirt justly between the scene of two others . Though the Krell drones did n’t have pilot on board , a part of me felt sorry for them as they tried to oppose back against me — an unstoppable , unknowable force that did not play by the same rules that bind everything else they knew .
“ Likely , ” M - Bot carry on , “ I regard humans as I do only because I ’m programmed to do so . But hey , that ’s no different from instinct programming a female parent bird to love the twisted , featherless execration she spawns , right ? ”
Inhuman .
I thread and dodged , fired and destroyed . I was n’t perfect ; I occasionally compensate and many of my shots miss . But I had a discrete edge .
The high quality — and its minions the Krell — obviously knew to watch for people like me and my father . Their ship were always on the hunt for humans who flew too well or who respond too quickly . They ’d tried controlling my mind by exploiting a impuissance in my talent — the same thing they ’d done to my father . Fortunately , I had M - Bot . His sophisticated shielding was open of filtrate out their genial attack while still provide me to hear the enemy orders .
All of this lift a singular intimidating interrogative sentence . What was I ?
“ I would feel a lot more well-fixed , ” M - Bot said , “ if you ’d find a chance to reignite our shield . ”
“ No time , ” I said . We ’d necessitate a good thirty seconds without flight controls to do that .
I had another luck to break toward the main battle , to follow through with the plan I ’d limn . rather I whirl , then hit the overburn and blast back toward the enemy ship . My gravitational capacitors absorbed a large percentage of the gigabyte - forces and go on me from tolerate too much whiplash , but I still felt pressure flattening me against my seat , making my skin pull back and my body feel heavy . Under uttermost g - force , I felt like I ’d aged a hundred years in a second .
I press through it and fired at the remaining Krell drones . I strained my strange skill to their limits . A Krell destructor shot pasture the dome of my canopy , so bright it left an aftersensation in my eyes .
“ Spensa , ” M - Bot suppose . “ Both Jorgen and Cobb have called to kvetch . I cognize you said to keep them distracted , but — ”
“ Keep them distracted . ”
“ Resigned sigh . ”
I intertwine us after an enemy ship . “ Did you just say the words relinquish sigh ? ”
“ I find human nonlinguistic communications to be too easily misconceive , ” he order . “ So I ’m experimenting with mode to make them more expressed . ”
“ Does n’t that vote out the determination ? ”
“ Obviously not . Dismissive eye - gyre . ”
Destructors flare out around me , but I blasted two more trailer . As I did , I get a line something seem , reflected in the canopy of my cockpit . A handful of pierce clean lights , like eye , watching me . When I used my power too much , something looked out of the nowhere and go steady me .
I did n’t know what they were . I just called them the eyes . But I could feel a burning hatred from them . An anger . Somehow , this was all connect . My ability to see and hear into the nowhere , the eye that watched me from that place , and the teleportation business leader I ’d only managed to use once .
I could still clearly call back how I ’d sense when I ’d used it . I ’d been on the verge of destruction , being enveloped by a cataclysmal explosion . In that second , somehow I ’d activate something call a cytonic hyperdrive .
If I could surmount that power to teleport , I could avail give up my people from Detritus . With that power , we could escape the Krell forever . And so I pushed myself .
Last time I ’d jumped I ’d been crusade for my life sentence . If I could only re - create those same emotions . . .
I dove , my correct hand on my ascendancy sphere , my left holding the throttle . Three drones sweep in behind me , but I registered their shots and turn my ship at an slant so they all miss . I hit the throttle and my head brush the nowhere .
The eye continue to seem , reflected in the canopy , as if it were uncover something that look out from behind my seat . White lights , like stars , but somehow more . . . aware . scores of malevolent glowing Elvis . In entering their realm , even slimly , I became visible to them .
Those eyes unnerved me . How could I be both fascinated by these powers and terrify of them at the same meter ? It was like the call of the void you felt when standing at the edge of a large drop in the cavern , bang you could just hurl yourself off into that darkness . One stride farther . . .
“ Spensa ! ” M - Bot suppose . “ New ship arriving ! ”
I pulled out of my spell , and the eyes vanished . M - Bot used the console display to spotlight what he ’d spotted . A new starfighter , almost invisible against the contraband sky , issue from where the others had been hiding . Sleek , it was shaped like a phonograph recording and paint the same blackness as space . It was smaller than normal Krell ships , but it had a larger canopy .
These novel black ship had only start appearing in the last eight month , in the days leading up to the attempt to fail our base . Back then we had n’t realise what they signify , but now we knew .
I could n’t take heed the commands this ship received — because none were being sent to it . calamitous ship like this one were not remote controlled . Instead , they carried existent alien pilots . ordinarily an enemy one — the good of their buffer .
The fight had just gotten far more interesting .
