The bill , snappily named ENCRYPT — that ’s Ensuring National Constitutional Rights of Your Private Telecommunications Act — is said to be a reaction to State Department - level encryption bills that have already been proposed in California and New York . Those pieces of legislation — really identical bills with the exact same choice of words — would strain to ban encryption on phones sold in the land .
While that ’s dumb on a number of degree , Lieu and Farenthold are say to be interested about the impact the laws may have on trade : differ encryption regulations in various State Department would make selling phones reasonably all-fired foxy for manufacturers , something that clearly has n’t been thought through in detail .
