Last nighttime , I did something that many Americans do on the habitue : I decided to watch reality TV . Except I was n’t watching bridezillas squabble over sit arrangement or desperate housewife cope with each other ’s husbands . Nah , I was see ocean otters .
Last night marked the first US airing of giving Blue Live , a 3 - part telecasting serial publication star the charismatic fauna and ecosystems of theMonterey Bay National Marine Sanctuaryoff the California coast . Not long ago , this 4,600 square mile region was an overexploited tragedy . But in the past 30 years , the Monterey Sanctuary has witnessed an ecological rebirth .
Today , its waters pullulate with humpback whales , outstanding white sharks , sea otter and ocean lions . To get up up public pastime in theMonterey Bay Aquarium ’s ongoing marine science enquiry and preservation efforts , PBS and BBC put together a 3 - night marine science blitz that on - atmosphere correspondent M. Sanjayan callsthe “ Superbowl of nature . ”

paradigm citation : Gareth Wildman
genuine to that claim , the show has already loggedmillions of prospect , and it ’s been trending repeatedly on societal media , with73,800 mention and counting .
During the class of last night ’s hour - long instalment , we watch footage of the world ’s largest sea lion breeding ground , located just 200 miles south of Monterey Bay . We learned how the humpback whale whale population off the California coast was devastated by commercial whaling during the nineteenth and early 20th C . The whales , which have made a remarkable comeback , are are now helping to maintain the trophic balance of the total Monterey ecosystem . And we saw ocean otter buzz off in tussles . ( “ The otter ’s liveliness is just full of drama and adventure , ” one goggle box horde nonchalantly remarked . ) It ’s the Monday nighttime football game science grind and nature lover have been wait for .

Of course , Big Blue Live is n’t the first program to bestow the wonder of the natural world into our living rooms — its succeeder taps into the monumental nature - loving consultation cultivated by the likes of Planet Earth and Madagascar . But more than any science or nature political program before , Big Blue Live has harnessed social media to wage its hearing .
Last nighttime saw a # BigBlueLive firestorm on Twitter , with men and woman geeking out over whale lice and barnacles or pose question to the scientist , some of which were answer during the program :
A world where you’re able to watch live hunchback instead of football on Monday night is a world I have it away 🐋 # BigBlueLive
