A group of research worker using sonar to find shipwrecks on the bottom of Lake Michigan have found something far older than crash cargo ships . They believe they ’ve find a 10 - thousand - year - old stone social organization like Stonehenge , including a rock carve with the figure of speech of a mastodont . io9 pal Geoff Manaugh report over at BLDG BLOG that the researchers ’ report ( with nerveless sonar figure ) was released last year to surprisingly little tucket .
And yet the possibility of a Stonehenge - esque adoration site would n’t be out of spot at the bottom of Lake Michigan . The region already has its share of petroglyphs from ancient tribes and other standing stone sites . These submersed stones could have been raised by local populations at a time when part of the lake layer was ironic , in the late Ice Age . More research is needed to decide whether these stones were put by humans , or but appear that manner .
