The deed Bloody New Year feel overly obvious : surely , this is yet anotherholiday - focus slasher moviein whichshrieking teens get peck off one by one . And while there ’s a number of that , this 1987 British release — also known as Horror Hotel and the far more spoiler - y Time Warp Terror — is also far , far weirder than you ’d carry .
After a brief possibility depicting a New Year ’s Eve political party dictation “ good - bye 1959 , hello 1960 , ” rendered in “ vintage ” footage , we curve right to the ‘ LXXX , where a group of ally are killing clock time at a seedy seaside circus . After they rescue an American girl , Carol ( Catherine Roman ) , from a trio of leering , chain - wield bully — freaking out a fortune - storyteller and causing untold amount of property damage in the appendage — they speed away and then are suddenly at sea . When their sailing boat runs into some rocks , they get out to a nearby island , where they pick up a curiously empty resort hotel that is , even more peculiarly , freshly decked out for Christmas … in July .
With its pieces in place , Bloody New Year — the last feature directed by Norman J. Warren ( Satan ’s Slave , Inseminoid ) , a coeval of British “ newfangled waving ” repugnance fable Pete Walker — waste no time in revealing to us , and its somewhat slower - to - catch - on lineament , that something is very wrong on this island . The intellect is heavily foreshadow too soon on , but even if you figure it out , you still wo n’t anticipate any of the bonkers decisions the film prepare moment to moment .

Part ghost hotel / glint Riffian , part zombie tarradiddle ( one that cheerfully salutes both the work of Italian master Lucio Fulci and the Evil Dead movies ) , and part Twilight Zone installment , Bloody New Year has a completely forgettable dramatis personae by from Roman ’s level - headed final fille , but is otherwise full of utterly unforgettable item . Just a few favorite : the impromptu screening of schlocky British sci - fi horror classic Fiend Without a font , a sudden attack featuring a sentient fishing lucre , the pertinacious manipulation of tinned sound personal effects , and the lo - fi particular effects , which encompass both the gory ( a head gets twisted around … double ! ) and the hilarious , as when a stair balustrade briefly come to aliveness and clinch down on the approximate articulatio radiocarpea . There ’s also a priceless moment when someone precipitate headfirst into a giant kitchen vat and the vat audibly burps with pleasure . Mmm - mmm . Delicious .
