When did you figure out what you want to do with the termination ? Because I heard with President Roslin , you be intimate about her tragic family backstory almost from day one , but hold off to show it . Was it like that with the finale ?
That was in the show bible , in reality . That was in the original show bible that I wrote up . I compose all these these fictional character bios , and that was in the character bio and we just never play it or had a point to it . The focus of the flashbacks was sort of to say , “ This is where the lineament ’s finish , ” and to [ avail us ] translate where they terminate and why . [ And to do that , you demand to ] see who they were , and see that it ’s all connect together . That story of fall behind her baby , and the subsequent events that you see in the finale , really are the connective tissue that choose Laura to Galactica , which also intend that ’s why she is where she is .
When did you acknowledge when you wrote the finale that this was what you want to do ?
It fare much more of course . Over the years , David and I had lots of estimation about the finale . When we were plotting out the fourth season , that was when we in earnest started taking about how it was going to end . And it switch several times over the course of the quaternary time of year . It was n’t really until we were in the elbow room , discover the last episode , that the flashbacks come in and we start talking in concrete terms about exactly how it ends , and the specific ends of each character , and exactly where Galactica is go to end up .
allow ’s babble about the buff reaction to the final installment . As with all thing in this music genre , there will be mass that love it and people that address out against it . How will you address those who may give unsatisfied ?
Well , all I can say is : We ’re happy . This is what we desire to do , this is the level I wanted to assure , and this is the oddment of the chapter . You get to the oddment of the book and you may not care the finish , but this is what the author prefer to tell you . I ’m very proud of it . We were all lofty to do it , and so we just hope the people apportion this flavor . But [ for ] the people that do n’t , there ’s nothing we can do about it .
How about fan hypothesis over the show , like credit of a missing Cylon named Daniel ? After his name was mention , the buff just proceed wild online . Did you intend for that to occur , and was he say to inspire this fully grown fan - driven backstory ?
You know , the Daniel thing is going to be one of the heavy debacle of the show , in full term of what fans call back and what the truth was . Because Daniel was not intend to be anything more than an interesting bit of backstory in that episode . And that ’s how we draw near it . It was just a fib that Cavil and Ellen tell each other , that sort of exit to the idea of who Cavil was and how bass his resentment were , and his jealous nature – and [ we wanted to ] do a Cain and Abel emblem . That was all it was .
And then after the show air . I started pick up all this stuff about how fans were obsessing about Daniel and how [ people call back ] Daniel was Kara ’s father , and he was the big surprise . I started thinking , “ Oh shit , slow up down hoi polloi , I do n’t want you to really get invested . ”
I usually do n’t wish to go out there and say , “ Oh , that ’s a bad possibility , ” because part of the use of watching the show is coming up with ideas . But this was gather such momentum , I did n’t want people to be going into the finale and really be waiting for the Daniel shoe to throw , when there ’s no shoe . It ’s one of those thing where you ’re inside the show , [ and ] you look at it , and go one manner . And then it ’s broadcast , and an audience sees it , and then they usurp on this piece that you never really anticipated , and then you ’re sort of amazed . And you ’re allege , “ slow up down , no – come back . ”
Well we take heed to every single thing you put up there , because they commonly do descend back at some point , so I ’m not surprised that name - drop took off .
Yeah , I kind of finger bad about that . It ’s like , “ Oh man . ” [ Laughs ]
