Christine : It finger … fine ? You really sound different than when I normally talk to you ?
io9 : Oh really ? Well , I do desire to chat about your bread . Mostly because it ’s really cool but also because , and this is what I tell everyone , I ’m really jealous that I ’ll never be able to do it myself —

io9 : Someday . I mean , after this wholeapocalypseis over , if that happens . So when did you first get into baking and how did that come about ?
Christine : So , I ’ve been baking for years . It really set about believably 15 or so year ago when I was gluten - barren and I really had to make my own lucre . Because at that fourth dimension , there were no pick out there , there was just nothing on the market . I commence to retrieve to myself , “ Where does one buy wild yeast ? Do you have to go to Whole Foods or the internet ? ” As it turns out , wild barm is just in our air travel . It ’s in our environment . It ’s just all around us all the time .

It ’s made of is flour and water . That ’s it . Christine : Because , it ’s kind of like your little pet affair [ laughs] … A confrere of mine — or Dave ’s fellow worker , I guess — she say her aunt always had a starter when she was a piffling girl , and his name was Herman . I was like , “ I wish that name , I think it ’s kind of way-out and fun , so I ’ll name it Herman . ” And then Mateo decided that he was Herman Cheerio , so his name is Herman Cheerio — and on very special function , it ’s Herman Cheerio Ice Cream .
io9 : Through the pandemic , we did get some memes , the commode newspaper publisher and all that , and one of them was making sourdough bread —

Christine : — yeah , it ’s very cliché .
io9 : Did you hop on the bandwagon , or would you say you overreach it to the punch ?
Christine : Umm , I would say it ’s believably a little piece of both . It ’s not like I was raw to baking in general — a lot of people all of a sudden were like , “ I ’m gon na test baking , ” and I do n’t experience like it was that for me . I already have a lolly machine , I make bread on a regular basis every calendar week . We do n’t buy sandwich bread . It kind of was something where I lastly had the metre to do something I ’d always wanted to do . You have to be able to tend to it and notice , and with a normal oeuvre agenda that ’s really hard to do .

io9 : So you started out just make some loot and making me very athirst from across the state , and then eventually you begin sample stencils . What made that make out about ?
Christine : You know , there ’s a lot of art that go into bread qualification , and when that ’s how you shape it or how the ingredients you habituate to do color , or the manner you score it — and scoring is the cut of the scratch … and a flock of people are making these really beautiful blueprint that have flower and wheat and all these little things with the cutting , the grading . And when I first endeavor to do that , I was terrible at it !
I wanted to find a room to have an artistic outlet and make something beautiful without having to really perfect the skills of the scoring . I ’m get upright at it , but it ’s really hard . And so with the stenciling , I find if I make a stencil or buy a stencil , and I ’m capable to put graphics on the breadstuff , that ’s just kind of an extra electrical outlet — I do n’t want to say it ’s easier , because it ’s its own solidification of skills , but it really started because I was having difficulty doing really intricate scoring .

io9 : What made you decide to focalize more on nerdy shit ?
Christine : I just really want to combine it with things that I love . We ’re mostly a pretty nerdy kin here — we’re very into Disney and nerd culture andStar Warsand Game of Thrones . We ’re very into nerd culture . I felt that if I was able to make that sort of artistic creation on the bread , that it would be able to not only derive exposure with novel audience but also introduce people to what kind of art can be on bread .
It was a manner for me to have even more fun with it , to see things that I wanted to see . Then to be able to engage with entirely new audiences . Because there ’s definitely sourdough groups . There ’s definitely people that — this is their passion and what they keep an eye on , and it ’s kind of an enclosed niche .

io9 : order me about some of the nerdy stencils you ’ve done on sourdough bread so far .
Christine : So my favorite 1 would in all likelihood be The Mandalorian one I did . The one that ’s really out there decent now and I ’m having a lot of fun with is I didHocus Pocuswith a silhouette of the Sanderson sis for Halloween . And I ’ve done a lot of Disney ace , like a silhouette of Sleeping Beauty ’s rook with Mickey ’s head word inside .

I ’m trying to think of a Game of Thrones one that I could do because there are some that are pretty difficult . If I think about the Stark wolf , it ’s like super intricate . I just do n’t be intimate how I would make that on a stencil .
io9 : Have you had any requests ?
Christine : No , no I do n’t intend so .

io9 : Can I make one ? Well not right now , I do n’t have one right now . But can I make one finally ?
Christine : You could try .
io9 : Did you take inspiration from other niche group that have embrace more wonk culture ? I be intimate embellishment is a cock-a-hoop one .

Christine : It ’s interesting that you say that because ever since I ’ve been doing these bread with this nontextual matter , it ’s actually exposed me to some of those other types of artistic creation signifier . Christine : Hmm . I do n’t know if they ’ve changed , but they ’ve intensified with the select thing that I continue to be passionate about . So , you have it off , things like Disney and Star Wars , and Game of Thrones specially . It ’s like I ’ve kind of put more of myself into that . But I do n’t imagine they changed . I guess with what you do for a animation , it really gave us an opportunity to really have a lot of crude academic session about stuff , and it was always really fun to hear what your take was versus mine . I would say that that ’s probably what it would be for me is that once you started doing this case of journalism , it really give us a chance to kind of talk about this clobber together . But it ’s not like I did n’t wish it before .
