CNN , Fox News , and MSNBC are the most widely watched cable news show networks in the U.S. To see how accurately these networks inform viewers about climate variety , the Union of Concerned Scientists ( UCS ) analyzed their coverage in 2013 and found that each web treated mood science very other than .
According to theUCS account , “ Science or Spin ? , ” Fox News was the least accurate ; 72 % of its 2013 climate science - related section moderate shoddy statement . CNN was in the midriff , with about a third of its segments featuring misleading statements . MSNBC was cited as the most exact , with only 8 % of segments containing misleading statements . ( Fox News , however , wins a consolation booty for “ most ameliorate , ” since , in 2012 , its climate change reporting was deemed 93 % inaccurate . )
In qualify the insurance coverage of the three networks , the UCS report observed :
Most of CNN ’s misleading insurance coverage stemmed from segments that feature debates between guests who accepted established climate science and other guests who scrap it . Such debate format … suggest established clime science is still wide debate among scientists , which it is not . This debate structure also allows opponent of climate policy to impart inaccurate portrayals of the science to TV audience … .If CNN had not hosted any argumentation about climate science , its accuracy would have increased by 16 per centum degree , to 86 percent .
Fox programme aired 186 segment that touched on mood change , and these segment featured discussions of mood science 27 percentage of the time . Fox hosts and Guest were more likely than those of other networks to disparage the study of climate skill and knock scientist .
Of MSNBC segment that mentioned clime science , 92 percent were entirely accurate , while 8 percent included deceptive characterization of the science … . The handful of inaccurate statement made by boniface and guests on MSNBC were all inaccurate in the same manner : all overstated the effects of mood change , peculiarly the connection between mood change and specific types of extreme weather , such as tornado .
