Here ’s the thing : Jerome does n’t make do to set two or so dozen high school cheerleader on flaming , only because he ca n’t get the lighter to flame on . Gordon and the cops arrive , there ’s a expectant gunfight ; Jerome and one of the other Maniax get by , but not before managing to define the gas aflame just far away enough that Gordon can run into the bus and drive it forth — which seems to me tough in that the busbar would undoubtedly be leaking gas , and the fervency would watch them , but I ’m also glad I was n’t wedge to watch two twelve teenager incinerate alive , so whatever .
There are two interesting things about this panorama . The first is that I think that Gotham is suddenly learn its task of in reality do up something resembling a Bat - universe earnestly . As both Theo and Jerome make clear , they do n’t want money , they desire fame and “ headlines . ” They need to be known , and fear , and to propagate panic throughout Gotham , something that near all the major Bat - villains also desire . What ’s cool about Gotham ( ! ) is seeing Gordon , the new Commissioner Essen and the other GCPD cops slow make they ’re dealing with a completely new type of criminal here , one that did n’t exist in the first season . Yes , Gotham has really , finally show us a major step towards the eventual future of Batman .
The second interesting thing is that if the Joker had coiffure that schoolbus full of cheerleaders on flame , it would n’t have been the most violent matter that happened on this episode . It would have been tied with the brutal and systematic execution of what appear to be every single GCPD officeholder that was n’t a principal character .
The evil , infinitely more merriment Barbara calls Gordon from inside the GCPD , tricking him into follow her . While he ’s out — and get his nerve beaten in by the expectant / bald / obtuse Maniac , because it was obviously a trap — Jerome and the other stay on Maniax enter GCPD in law uniform and start gun everyone down . copper after cop is shot and killed ; this includes Essen , who Jerome ties up and mock for a bit before murdering . It ’s crazy , and when Gordon finally comes back , only he , Leslie ( who hid in the morgue ) , Nygma and Kringle ( because they ’re major character ) stand alive among dozens and dozen of corpses . Like , so many pig are clearly dead that I do n’t even know how Gotham has a police power anymore . It ’s authentically worrisome to see .
This wholesale annihilation of the police force forces Bullock out of retreat ( to the seething ire of his fiancée , the miss from Strangers with Candy , who appeared last time of year ) . Will two law detectives , two aesculapian examiners , and a file shop assistant be enough to stop the greatest , most homicidal threat Gotham City has ever know ? I doubt it , but god facilitate me if I ’m not frantic to watch out them essay .
Assorted reflection :
• The B - story pot with Bruce and Alfred in the Dad - cave . Bruce is excited to turn on his soda pop ’s information processing system to find out what the hell is wrong with Wayne Enterprises , and then Alfred of a sudden beats the figurer to Inferno and back . Bruce freaks out , understandably ; Alfred read he did it to protect Bruce , in the sense that whatever ’s on the computing machine almost certainly convey his dad killed . As per common , instead of discussing this with Bruce , Alfred ’s first thought was to commit violence on an pulseless object .
• Bruce fires Alfred , but Gotham jubilantly does n’t feign this is a hold up modification ; Bruce finds Alfred at the post and re - hires him in a scene that ends up with Bruce asking Alfred to school him , and Alfred accord to get the electronic computer set .

• In case anyone doubt my belief that Gotham is a prequel to Batman ’ 66 , the Maniax show up wearing equalize outfits three different times . In the first scene they ’re still in their stripy prison outfits , and at the end they ’re in disguise at cops , so possibly they do n’t count . But during the cheerleader vista they ’ve go out of their way to put on superposable straitjacket .
• Barbara enters the sequence whipping the kidnapped Barbara with the Tigress . I think their burgeoning sexytime Latinian language is totally gratuitous , but I ’m still delight that she is totally , unequivocally embracing evil .
• Next week on Gotham : Jerome terrorizes his papa — the blind fortuneteller of last season — and it appears that Jerome is holding Bruce surety at one spot ? That seems … implausibly problematic for Bruce to meet the proto - Joker as a kid , but it should be interesting still .
