Seriously , how ? See for yourself . This was an entirely Mark Sheppard - less time of year opener … and still the one standout scene involved Mark Sheppard . Mostly because you could just imagine the face on his face .
Spoilers ahead …
I do not have much to say about Supernatural ’s ninth ( ! ) season opener . I feel like this is the tenth time we ’ve had a life - or - death battle inside Sam ’s mental capacity , and at least this sentence there were n’t two Sams fighting each other . And basically , at this full stop , everything bad that happens is either Castiel ’s fault or Dean ’s .
In a nutshell , even though Dean stopped the “ closing the William Henry Gates of Hell ” ritual because Sammy was going to die , Sammy is dying anyway . Which does n’t seem all that surprising , and really makes you wish they ’d actually closed the gate of Hell while they had the chance . So Dean puts out a universal distress call to every one of the angels who fell from Heaven , hoping one of them can help . Some malevolent angels show up , but so does the obviously overnice Ezekiel ( Tahmoh Penikett ) who possess Sam , allowing him to cure Sam ’s body , and commit whatever incredibly malign acts Ezekiel want to perpetrate .
And along the way , inside Sam ’s point , Dean and Bobby play out a version of this scenario :

And meanwhile , Castiel has n’t quite figured out that being amply human substance he needs to eat and drink water and go to the commode , and this do as a recurring shock to him . He meets a overnice angel , who created the Grand Canyon and wants to go see it , but she twist out to have innovation on Castiel ’s vessel . He break up her railcar and she ’s injured enough for him to dig him — but not before she warns that all the other angel are go to want to penalise Castiel for his purpose in booting them all out of Heaven .
So fundamentally , Dean is hold out to be confront the results of his failure to shut the gates of Hell , while everybody is going to be face with the radioactive dust from Castiel getting tricked into helping with the ejection of all the angels from Heaven . If this show run on angst ( and it does ) then it ’s go into time of year nine with a full cooler of gas .
But we ’re still more excited about what ( or rather who ) is in the body .
