Over 100 years ago , a 10th - century copy of ancient writings by the famous Greek mathematician Archimedes was come upon in an Istanbul convent . But the handwritten copy had been scraped from the parchment , its numerical theory scribbled over with supplicant and illustrations .
But , thanks to modern technology , the disk of Archimedes ’ penning had not been effaced for good .
When the lambskin chance its path into the hand of an anonymous , billionaire accumulator in 1998 , William Noel — Curator of Manuscripts at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore , MD — set out to convert the palimpsest ’s new possessor to have the original writings studied , doctor , and exhibited at the Walters .
The purchaser not only handed the writings over to Noel , he actually fund their restoration , providing an international team of scientist and experts with the means necessary to divulge the ancient manuscript ’s secrets . Now , after receiving 12 age of meticulous attention in the form of research and renovation , The Archimedes Palimpsest has made its debut here:“Lost and Found : The Secrets of Archimedes . ”

At the exposition ’s start you come face to face with two leave from the Palimpsest ; all you see is a fragment of a ruin manuscript , charred , stained and inscribed with prayers . But lines of ruby-red text edition , just visible , persist perpendicular to those prayers . And you could also make out the ghost of a diagram , a spiral . Above these leave a series of slides indicate the same Page under discolour luminousness , revealing various detail .
The apposition neatly demonstrates the challenge posed by the Palimpsest and the technology used to explore it . The drive is made more complicated by the Palimpsest ’s nature . After being erased , each leaf was rotated 90 degrees and folded in one-half , one Archimedes varlet yielding two of the prayer book ’s .
That book was apparently in use for centuries at the Monastery of St. Sabbas in the Judaean Desert . Its tug glint out of the rock in one of David Roberts ’s otherworldly Holy Land illustration from 1842 , shown here . But by then the book was live on . In 1844 a scriptural scholar happened upon it at the Metochion of the Holy Sepulcher in Istanbul and saw the rum math underneath ; a leaf from the script was find in his estate and deposit at Cambridge University Library .
Then , in 1906 , the Danish Archimedes scholarly person Johan Ludvig Heiberg see the Holy Writ in Istanbul and recognized seven treatises by Archimedes behind the prayers , making it the oldest reference for his writing in existence and the lonesome source for two unknown works , “ Method ” and “ Stomachion . ”Heiberg deciphered much of the textand took photographs that he work on in Copenhagen .
It was assumed that Heiberg detect all there was to find out , which may be one reason that , when the buffet mass was put on sales agreement almost a C by and by , few buyers were puff after its riches .
