lupita nyongo

Last night, all eyes were on Lupita Nyong’o at the premiere of her filmQueen of Katwe. The actress teamed her elegant lavender Elie Saab gown with a matching headwrap and Graziela Gems earrings, then took the “royal purple” theme to the next level with a gorgeous wash of lilac shadow. Can’t stop staring? You have celeb proNick Baroseto thank, and he shared all the scoop and a behind-the-scenes shot with PeopleStyle.

“I know Lupita and her hair stylist,Vernon Francois, were working with a ‘crown’ (headwrap) and that it would be the same purple color as her [Elie Saab] dress, so I wanted to create a strong focus on the lips,” Barose tells PeopleStyle of the inspiration behind the show-stopping makeup move. “When Lupita’s hair is ‘crowned,’ I find that I can go extra dramatic with her makeup and showcase her face more.”

And for this “glamorous, fresh, fun” look, Barose brainstormed with both Nyong’o, a Lancôme ambassador, and Francois to collectively come up with the colorful look. “It’s pretty organic and fluid; we look at the dress and then we decide,” he says of the creative process. “It’s very spontaneous, which I think is the best way to go. I’m not married to a pre-conceptual idea. I change lipstick choices last minute all the time.”

He adds: “For Lupita’s look, I was planning to use a more purple, glossy lip, but then I realized it might have been too close a match with her dress, so I picked a different lipstick shade at the 11th hour.”

But before we talk specifics about the star’s eye-popping pout, let’s start with the eyes, shall we? Barose began the subtle shadow look with the lilac shade from theLancôme Color Design 5 Pan Eyeshadow Palette in Mauve Chérie, which he applied with a damp eyeshadow brush over both lids. He then applied the mauve shade (from the same palette) to the outer corners of the eye to create an added depth to the layered shadow look. To finish, the pro sketched theLancôme Grandiôse Lineracross the upper lash lines and then added a few coats of mascara to “define the eyes.”

“We didn’t use any false lashes, which I find is usually a ‘red-carpet must’,” Barose tells PeopleStyle. “But I like this look just with mascara. It feels fresher and more glamorous and free.”

Now for the lips. Barose prepped Nyong’o’s pucker withLancôme Absolue Precious Cells Nourishing Lip Balm, letting the formula seep into her lips for full hydration. Once dry, it was time for color!

The pro applied the fuchsia-huedLancôme L’Absolu Rouge lipstick in Rose Lancômeto the star’s pout — from the center of the lips and out toward the corners, straight from the bullet — in order to create a “creamier, smoother finish.”

“I rarely use the same shade on Lupita, especially when it comes to something bold and dramatic like this,” he says. “It’s fun to play and not commit to a ‘signature lipstick’.”

“Fuchsia tones on lips work well with the purple shade of her dress,” the pro tells PeopleStyle. “It’s in the same family, but not too close of a match so it adds boldness and glamour to the mouth while still keeping it fresh and playful. [It’s] less serious than a classic red lip.”

He added: “It goes to show you that you can have fun and be open-minded when it comes to lipstick, he says. “It’s also the quickest change — all you have to do is wipe away then apply new one.”

And after all was said and done, how did Nyong’o feel about the look? “She loved the lip color!” said Barose.
