Tom Bradyis known for breaking records on the field, but now he is also smashing the status quo during auctions.

A rookie card of the star New England Patriots player recently made history after it sold in an auction this week for more than $400,000 — the highest price that has ever been bid on for a football card.

Only 100 copies of the card have ever been produced, while just two of them have received a Beckett Grading Service grade nine, which means it is in mint condition, according to PWCC. Because of this, the card is considered to be extremely rare, but the big sale did not come as a surprise to PWCC Marketplace CEO Brett Huigens.

“This sale was record-setting but also largely predicted,” HuigenstoldESPN in a statement. “The trading card market is rapidly maturing among tangible asset investors and record prices are becoming increasingly frequent, especially among the market’s most desired issues.”

PWCC also added that the rookie card was the “highest quality specimen” that they have ever auctioned.

“This auction event featured the finest football card we’ve brokered in our 20-year history and achieved the highest-ever hammer price for a football card,” Huigens added, according to ESPN. “We were honored to present this asset to the public and are delighted for the new owner.”

Ahead of the sale, the card’s description on PWCC’s website was said to be “highest graded example in the books” but the estimated price was unknown.

“Private sales of this card in lower grade have sold at retail for over $250,000 in recent times, though none have held subgrades to match this example and none have sold at auction where a true market value can be determined,” the company wrote.

The giant price tag comes just weeks after Brady, 41,won his sixth-ever Super Bowl. The NFL star is a three-time MVP, three-time All-Pro, and 14-time Pro-Bowl player, accordingto Pro Football Reference.

In 2018, the California native racked up 4355 yards on the season, bringing his career total to 70,514 yards. Meanwhile, Brady also surpassed 500 touchdowns for his career and led his team to an 11-5 record.

While Brady may hold the prestigious title for highest auction price for a football card, he falls short to many competitors from the baseball diamond.

In 2016, the T206 Honus Wagner cardfetched $3.1 million, while a 1952 Micky Mantle cardsold for $2.88 millionin April 2018,Sports Illustratedreported.
