Stefanie Sherk, the model wife of actorDemián Bichir, died on April 20 at 43, her husband announced on his Instagram Wednesday.
The actress’s death wasruled a suicide, the L.A. County Medical Examiner-Coroner confirmed to PEOPLE. One of the causes of death was listed as drowning.
Sherk was born in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Canada and started dating Bichir in 2010. Though news of their marriage was never reported, the actor referred to her as his wife in his heartbreaking post.
“It has been the saddest and toughest time of our lives and we don’t know how much time it will take for us to overcome this pain,” Bichir, 55, wrote. “Stefanie’s beautiful, angelical and talented presence will be immensely missed. We will hold Stefanie in our hearts forever.”

Bichir opened up about his relationship with Sherk in an interview in 2015, where he said he’d had“fantastic romance ever since I met my girl.”
At the time, the actor didn’t confirm whether the two were going to get married.

Sherk last posted on Instagram in Dec. 2018 and hadn’t been active on Twitter since June 2018. She last shared a sweet birthday message to her mother Susan on Dec. 14.
Bichir confirmed the sad news in his Instagram post, explaining that Sherk — whom he called “my beloved and loving wife” — had “passed away peacefully.”
“We thank everybody beforehand for their prayers and we respectfully ask for your understanding so we may grieve in peace and privacy in these incredibly difficult times,” Bichir added. “It is our sincerest hope that our beautiful Stefanie, my angel and love of my life, will rest in eternal peace.”
A cause of death was not revealed.
